Naatri is a free family tree platform where every family member sees the tree from their own personal point of view — with exact relationship names in English, Nepali, and Hindi. Here is how to create your family tree in Naatri, step by step.
Step 1: Sign Up and Create Your Tree
Setting up takes less than two minutes:
- Visit Naatri and click Get started (or go directly to /start).
- Sign up with your email and password, or log in with Google or Facebook.
- On the Get started page, select the Create a tree tab.
- Enter a name for your tree — for example, "The Sharma Family" or "Dhakal Vanshavali" — and an optional description.
- Click Create tree.
You automatically become the Tree Administrator. Naatri creates your profile as the first node, the anchor from which your family tree grows.
Step 2: Add Your Immediate Family
Once your tree is created, you enter the interactive tree view. Adding relatives is fast using the Quick Add tools:
- Click your profile card on the tree canvas to open the details drawer.
- Choose Add relative or pick a quick relationship action: Father, Mother, Spouse/Partner, Son, Daughter, Brother, or Sister.
- Fill in the key details for each family member:
- Full name — in English script and native script (Devanagari for Nepali or Hindi names).
- Gender — select gender identity.
- Birth date & calendar — Naatri supports both Gregorian (AD) and Bikram Sambat (BS) dates, so birth records are accurate across traditional and modern calendars.
- Living status & birthplace — mark living or deceased, and add birthplace or current residence.
- Profile photo — upload a photo with Naatri's built-in avatar cropper.
Step 3: Connect Extended and Nuanced Relationships
Real families are not simple. Naatri supports detailed, flexible relationship types so your tree reflects actual family history:
- Spouses & partners — record marriage dates, anniversary notes, or mark relationships as separated or divorced.
- Co-parents — connect parents who share children without a formal marriage node.
- Step, half, and adopted edges — tag connections as step-relationships, half-siblings, or adoptive lines. Naatri renders these with distinct visual styling (dashed lines or badge icons) directly on the chart.
As you add relatives, Naatri automatically connects branches across generations.
Step 4: See the Tree From Anyone's Point of View
This is Naatri's standout feature. Traditional family tree tools calculate relationships from a single fixed perspective. Naatri dynamically computes exact relationship terms from every person's point of view:
- Interactive tree view — drag to pan, scroll to zoom, and expand or collapse branches to focus on specific family lines.
- List view — switch to a clean, searchable directory of all family members.
- The "Viewing as" POV switcher — click the selector in the top navigation bar and pick any relative on the tree.
Watch how relationship titles change instantly:
- From your perspective, your father's older brother is labeled Thulobuba (ठूलोबुबा) in Nepali or Tau (ताऊ) in Hindi.
- Switch the POV to your father, and that same person becomes Dai (दाइ) or Bada Bhai (बड़ा भाई).
- Switch to your child, and he becomes Thulo Hajurba (ठूलो हजुरबा) / Bade Dada (बड़े दादा).
Naatri includes hundreds of kinship terms across English, Nepali, and Hindi — spanning in-laws, cousins, aunts, uncles, and six generations of descendants.
Step 5: Invite Relatives and Link Profiles
A family tree is best built together. Naatri makes collaboration simple and secure:
- Share your join code — open Tree Settings in the admin sidebar to find your tree's unique join code or invite link.
- Relatives join — send the code to siblings, parents, or cousins. They visit Naatri, enter the code, and request access.
- Profile claims — when a relative joins, they search for their name on the tree and submit a profile claim.
- Admin approval — you approve the claim in the Claim Queue. Once approved, their account links to their node on the tree.
- Whenever they sign in, they automatically see the entire family tree centered on their own personal POV.
Bonus: Import an Existing Tree via GEDCOM
Already have a family tree on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FamilyTreeMaker, or Gramps? You don't need to start from scratch:
- Export your
.ged(GEDCOM) file from the other platform. - In Naatri, go to Import a family tree.
- Upload your
.gedfile (up to 12 MB). - Naatri imports your data into a 30-day review draft. Inspect the tree, double-check names and dates, and choose to keep it as a new tree when you're ready.
Step 6: Export Charts and Keep Full Data Ownership
Your family data stays entirely yours. Naatri provides flexible export options:
- Printable keepsake charts — click Export Chart to generate high-resolution SVG, PNG, or PDF diagrams. Perfect for family gatherings, reunions, or framing.
- GEDCOM backup — download a complete GEDCOM export of your tree anytime from Tree Settings.
Why Naatri?
Most family tree tools flatten every relationship into generic English labels — "uncle," "aunt," "cousin." That is not how real families talk to or about each other, especially in South Asian cultures where your father's older brother, father's younger brother, and mother's brother are three completely different relationships with three different names.
Naatri was built to solve exactly this:
- Personal point of view — every member sees the tree from their own seat, not a fixed "owner" perspective.
- Exact kinship terms — hundreds of relationship names in English, Nepali (ठूलोबुबा, काका, मामा, फुपू), and Hindi (ताऊ, चाचा, मामा, बुआ) — not just "uncle."
- Dual calendar support — Gregorian (AD) and Bikram Sambat (BS) dates side by side.
- Dual script names — English and Devanagari on every profile.
- Invite-only by default — your tree is visible only to people you invite. No ads, no data sales.
- Collaborative — family members join, claim their profile, and suggest edits through a review queue.
- Completely free — tree creation, unlimited members, multilingual POV kinship labeling, GEDCOM import/export, and chart downloads with no paywalls or hidden fees.
